• Girl And Her Dog Rescue A Mother Goat And Her Newborn Baby

This is 11-year-old Hamdü Sena Bilgin. She lives in a small village outside the city of Rize, in Turkey. Hamdü Sena and her family operate a small farm, where they raise goats for their milk. She serves as goatherd, the animals' protector and guide.

Her dog, Tomi, is always by her side to help, even during the cold winter months. Recently, while Hamdü Sena and her loyal pup were tending to goats grazing on a snowy hillside far from home, one of them suddenly went into labor. Fearing that the goat, and her soon-to-be-arriving baby, would be too weak to make it back on their own, the young goatherd sprang into action.

"After the goat gave birth, I led the rest of the herd back to their shelter," Hamdü Sena said, "Then I grabbed two backpacks from the house and went back to the goat and her baby with Tomi."

Although the backpacks are normally filled with books and school supplies, on this day, their cargo would be far more precious indeed. Once back at the spot, Hamdü Sena loaded the mother goat into her backpack, and put the fragile baby into the other. Tomi carried her.

"He's a good dog," Hamdü Sena said. "Very smart."

Together, they slogged through the steep, wintery terrain to bring the new family to safety. "The snow was so thick, I was exhausted," said Hamdü Sena. "But it was worth it."

She was joined near the end of the trek by her brother, who captured photos of the rescue in action. Thanks to Hamdü Sena and Tomi's dedication to the animals they tend, the mother goat and her baby are now both safe and sound. But while the heroic 11-year-old might consider it her duty to the herd to protect them all from harm

• When refugees unveil their most valuable possession

For his personal project entitled ImPORTRAITS, photographer Gabriel Hill has produced a series of portraits of refugees, revealing their most valuable possession.
A powerful and moving way of telling their stories through a simple object, be it a picture, a cuddly toy or even a simple piece of paper.

Photo Shows: It took me almost nine months to arrive in Switzerland. I wanted to take a ship from Turkey to Greece, but we kept getting caught by the coast guard in Greece and sent back to Turkey. I tried ve times—once, the boat over- turned and sank.
From all the things I took with me, only this cellphone is left. My mother bought it just before I ed Afghanistan—she spent 3,000 afghani [about $45] on it. That‘s half of my family‘s monthly income.
The phone was the only way I could let my family know where I was on my journey and that I was OK. My mother was very worried, so a call from time to time helped to calm her down. The phone also made me feel safer and less lonely.“
Storm chaser Mike Olbinski captures lightning, tornadoes and dramatic cloud formations in stunning images that convey the awesome power and beauty of nature.

Photographer Mike Olbinski chases storms throughout his native Arizona and further afield, capturing lightning, tornadoes and dramatic cloud formations in images that convey the awesome power and beauty of nature. A new book, Storm Chaser, gathers 100 of his most breathtaking images. He says he had always been interested in storms and would travel thousands of miles every year, chasing the big supercells and tornadoes that appear on the central plains of the United States each spring. "But in 2011 my life changed," he says, "On 5 July I received a text with a photo of a dust storm rolling into the Phoenix area from the southeast. The day before I had just started practising time lapse photography and when I heard about a dust storm heading my way, I grabbed my gear and headed to a parking garage down the street. I thought that a time-lapse of a dust storm over the city would really give people an idea of how large these things can be.

"As I pulled up to the top of the parking garage, my jaw dropped. The sky before me was unlike anything I'd ever seen. A massive wall of dust was headed my way. Not the normal dust storms you tend to see out here. No, this was like the end of the world. The wall was dense, thick and as tall as the clouds. It looked like a scene from the movie Independence Day. The National Weather Service would later say it was over 100 miles wide and a mile high." The most amazing moment though for me was the day when I received a phone call from Al Gore's office, asking if they could use the footage in their climate change presentations. I was absolutely blown away.
mikes book is out now "Storm Chaser by Mike Olbinksi", published by Pen & Sword Books.
• The REAL road warriors: 'Mad Max' battle buses and tanks built by Kurdish fighters to repel ISIS soldiers in Syria

Brave Kurdish soldiers battling Islamic State militants in northern Syria have converted tractors and lorries into tanks by adding metal plates to create Mad Max-style road warriors.

The peshmerga troops were forced to take the initiative and create their own armoured vehicles after the far better equipped ISIS jihadists repeatedly got the better of the Kurds' Soviet-era military fleet.

In recent weeks hundreds of thousands of Syrian Kurds have been forced to flee across the border into Turkey, as ISIS launched an onslaught into the autonomous Kurdish territory in northern Syria.

Despite the odds being against them, peshmerga forces have bravely fought back against the estimated 31,000 ISIS militants operating in Syria and Iraq - whose self-declared 'caliphate' forms an area larger than Britain with a population of four million brutally oppressed citizens.

In order to resist ISIS' high-tech firepower, the Kurdish forces have converted tractors and other farm equipment into heavily-armoured vehicles fitted aging Soviet-era guns.

Previously troops from the People's Protection Units (YPG) in northern Syria had little more than rifles and flak jackets - making them incredibly vulnerable in the face of heavily-armed ISIS terrorists.

Much of the weaponry and military equipment currently in the hands of the jihadists was gathered after thousands of members of the U.S. trained and expensively equipped Iraqi army melted away in the face of a lightning advance by just a few hundred ISIS militants in June.

As the soldiers fled the scene, they left behind millions of pounds worth of top-of-the-range and barely used equipment - all of which was quickly swept up by ISIS.

Since then the Kurdish peshmerga forces have carried out the defence of much of northern Syria and Iraq, despite the fact many of the militants only know how to operate clunky, decades-old
