• Dead Greyhound wrapped in bin bags and dumped in Basildon

Dead greyhound coldy cast aside like rubbish at the side of the road
The RSPCA has appealed for information after a dog’s body was found dumped in Essex, wrapped in bin bags and left like rubbish.

The body of the tan, unneutered male greyhound was found wrapped up in two black bin bags and left on the pavement in Somerset Gardens, Pitsea, in Basildon, on Monday morning (January 4).

A member of the public spotted the dog’s body and reported the sad discovery to the RSPCA.

Inspector Marie Hammerton attended the scene and collected the dog’s body.

She said: “Local residents believe the dog’s body was dumped in the area overnight.

“It must have been so upsetting for neighbours to wake up this morning to such a tragic sight. And it’s unbelievable to think that someone could just dump his body on the side of the road like rubbish.

“It is not clear whether this dog has died of natural causes and has been disposed of improperly, or whether he has died as a result of neglect or cruelty.

“I’d urge anyone who may have information on who this dog belonged to, or who saw anything suspicious in the area around the time the body was dumped, to call the RSPCA’s appeal line on 0300 123 8018.”

The greyhound was not microchipped and was not wearing an identification tag or collar.
People carry a sheet-covered vendor's "corpse" on a gurney to help him fake his own death for financial gains on August 3, 2013 in Wuhan, Hubei province of China. They claimed that urban management workers had beaten the man to death and demanded tens of thousands of yuan in compensation. The scheme ended up backfiring on the vendor himself because he couldn't bear the heat. ©Exclusivepix

 • Zombie chic: Indonesian province’s bizarre annual ritual of digging up its dead to give them a wash, groom and dress them in new clothes

They say the dead live on in our hearts and minds - but in one Indonesian province, the deceased continue to walk the earth in a rather more literal, zombie-like fashion.
Families in Toraja in South Sulawesi dig up the bodies of their dead relatives before washing, grooming and dressing them in fancy new clothes.
Even dead children are exhumed - two of these photos show the skeleton of a baby wrapped in a print dress with a doll laid next to it.
Damaged coffins are fixed or replaced, and the mummies are then walked around the province by following a path of straight lines.
The ritual is called Ma'nene, or The Ceremony of Cleaning Corpses.
According to the ancient Torajan belief system, the spirit of a dead person must return to his village of origin.
So if a person died on a journey, the family would go to the place of death and accompany the deceased back home by walking them back to the village.
In the past, people were frightened to journey far, in case they died while they were away and were unable to return to their village.
• Family give their fish an epic goodbye, with a viking funeral

After valiantly guarding one family’s bathroom for many years, a dead fish was given an epic sendoff by his owners. Instead of flushing him down the toilet, they gave him a viking funeral.
Peeping Tom, a six-and-a-half-year-old fish, spent his life watching his humans poop and shower (ergo the name). One day, his teen owner’s dad moved his bowl away from the sunlight, and he died.

To pay for his sin, the dad built Peeping Tom a miniature ship, complete with a customised sail and figurehead. They even named it the SS Boobies, a name the pet would have loved and cherished.

His boat was then set on fire –
