Thai police scour the street in front of Erawan Shrine for evidence after a large explosion at the shrine. An explosion at Erawan Shrine, a popular tourist attraction and important religious shrine, in the heart of the Bangkok shopping district killed at least 19 people and injured more than 120 others, mostly foreign tourists, during the Monday evening rush hour. Twelve of the dead were killed at the scene. Thai police said an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was detonated at 18.55. JUTAPORN PROMPAN, the leader of the Red Shirts, offers a wai or traditional Thai greeting at a Red Shirt meeting in Bangkok Sunday. Red Shirts and supporters of the government of Yingluck Shinawatra, the Prime Minister of Thailand, gathered in a suburb of Bangkok this weekend to show support for the government. The Thai government is dealing with ongoing protests led by anti-government activists. Legal challenges filed by critics of the government could bring the government down as soon as the end of April. The Red Shirt rally this weekend was to show support for the government, which public opinion polls show still has the support of most of the electorate.
• BANGKOK MAN LIVESTREAMS SLEEPING WOMAN THEN RAPES HER

A standoff lasting seven hours at a hotel in southeast metro Bangkok ended Wednesday night with a man arrested on suspicion of livestreaming a woman as she slept and then raping her.

Thanapol Nilpat opened fire on police as they tried to capture him at a hotel in Samut Prakan’s Bang Phli district, leading to the long confrontation. No officers were injured.

He eventually surrendered to police, who said he later confessed to the assault two weeks ago in Bangkok’s Suan Luang neighborhood. Thanapol, they said, saw a sleeping woman through an open door of an apartment. He entered the room and began streaming video of her over Bigo Live, a Singapore-based social media service that has many users in Thailand.

Thanapol said the woman woke up and at that point he sexually assaulted her before escaping. A security camera near the apartment caught him leaving the scene.
• Body in Bangkok freezer has been dead for 8 years

An elderly Caucasian man, whose dismembered body was found stuffed in a freezer during a police raid on a passport forgery gang’s hideout, is believed to have died about eight years ago, making it difficult to identify him.

The body parts were found last Friday at a shophouse on Sukhumvit Soi 56. Investigators believe one of the three suspects arrested after the raid bought the freezer in the Rama IV area in 2008, Metropolitan Police Division 5 chief Somprasong Yenthuam said Tuesday.

This new piece of information has led authorities to assume the victim died quite some time ago, Pol Maj Gen Somprasong said.

On Monday, Chulalongkorn Hospital’s head of forensic medicine, Udomsak Hoonwijit, said the body parts had been frozen for an extended period.

One of the three suspects, earlier identified as British national Peter Andrew Colter, and reportedly married to a Thai woman, had told police the freezer was moved from his former house on Ekkamai Soi 12 to the shophouse on Sukhumvit Soi 56.

Mr Colter said he had no idea what was inside the freezer.

Police found several passports belonging to him with different names, making it difficult to determine exactly where he is from. Police believe he is the gang’s leader and has knowledge about the corpse, Pol Gen Somprasong said.

However, the man has been tight-lipped, providing no information about the victim. His alleged accomplices — Aaron Thomas Gabel and Jame Douglas Eger — have been confirmed by US embassy in Bangkok to be US nationals.

Officers have questioned three individuals who moved the freezer from Mr Colter’s former house. However, due to the ongoing investigation, their accounts must remain confidential for the moment, according to police.

Meanwhile, a team of forensic doctors conducted a new postmortem examination Tuesday on the body and are expected to share results with officers Wednesday, city police chief Sanit Mahathavorn said. Investiga

Investiga

 • Floating Markets of Southeast Asia

Floating markets, where goods are sold from boats, are a trademark attraction among the Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam. They originate from a time when water transport played an important role in daily life.
All these countries are located either on islands or on wet lowlands with broad river valleys. Located in tropical climate, this region was thick jungles prior to human development. The first places to be settled were adjacent to the rivers, and the people living there used boats as their main mode of travel rather than trying to push their way through the dense jungle. Although the region is now developed and there is a network of roads connecting all cities and towns, boats are still used for transport and trade by the communities along the waterways, especially by farmers whose farmlands are located by the riverside.

Farmers bring their produces in boats to the markets and sell them to local dealers directly from the boats, eliminating the need to setup shops in the docks. That way they could quickly sell their products and return back to their home. The local dealers buy the products and sell them to shops in the neighboring towns and to wholesale dealers from the big towns. Floating markets are also a big tourist draw.
The most famous floating market, and a tourist haven, is the one in Damnoen Saduak about 100km southwest of Bangkok. The floating market is crowded with hundreds of vendors and purchasers floating in their small boats selling and buying agricultural products and local food. The market opens in the early morning and closes about an hour before noon.
Amphawa floating market, located in Amphawa district, about 72 km from Bangkok, is not as large as Damnoen Saduak floating market but it is more authentic, with visitors almost exclusively Thais. It is an evening floating market but some stalls are opened at noon too. Other floating markets around Bangkok include Wat Sai Floati

 • Man jailed 18 months for cruelty to cats

Panuwat Singsahut, 26, was charged in the North Bangkok District Court on Aug 15 with cruelty to animals after he was found to have killed nine cats – on July 10, 18, 20, 24, 26, 29, 30 and 31 – at his apartment on Lat Phrao Rd.

Panuwat, who was free on B20,000 bail, turned up at the court today (Sept 22), accompanied by relatives, to hear the ruling.

The court found he had violated Sections 20 and 31 of the Prevention of Cruelty and Welfare of Animals Act and Section 381 of the Criminal Code, and sentenced him to a total of 36 months imprisonment on nine counts, each carrying a jail term of 4 months.

Due to his confession, the sentence was halved to 18 months. It was not suspended because Panuwat had previously been given a jail sentence.

His relatives said they would seek Panuwat’s release on bail, pending an appeal.

The court was told Panuwat lived in an apartment in Soi Mahadthai 13 in Wang Thong Lang district and adopted the nine cats after seeing an announcement on Facebook.

He was allowed to take the cats in his care as he had adopted many cats before.

On Aug 12, a message was published on the Facebook page “Watchdog Thailand” saying that Panuwat did not reply when contacted to return the cats.

A complaint was filed with Wang Thong Lang police.

During a search of his apartment on Aug 14, police found the dead cats in waste containers.

Panuwat told police he had killed the cats in fits of rage.
• Phuket Police dismiss rape rumours in woman’s in four-story fall from building

Police have dismissed rumours that a 21-year-old woman was raped, leading to her falling from the fourth floor of a building in Phuket Town this morning (May 5).

Phuket City Police Chief Col Kamol Osiri and Deputy Superintendent Lt Col Chao Phomna both arrived in person, as did Pol Capt Virat Khongkhawhai, who received the report.

The woman* was in a state of deep distress, and hung one leg over the ledge, pulled it back and then swung the other leg over in seeming indecisiveness over whether to launch herself over the side of the building.

Kusoldharm rescue workers and officers from the Phuket City branch of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation attempted to talk the woman back to safety, but she climbed over the edge and ended up grabbing hold of a small seam in the bricks to prevent her from falling further.

Unable to recover the woman from the side of the building, the woman fell, plunging three stories onto the ground-floor awning below before bouncing onto the concrete street.

The woman was bleeding from the head as rescue workers rushed her to Vachira Phuket Hospital.

The woman, originally from Bangkok, lived on the third floor of the building, a woman who said she was a friend to the victim told The Phuket News at the scene.

The friend said the woman was working in Phuket, but did not specify what she did to make a living.

In the woman’s room, police found four A4 sheets of paper with hand-written messages that officers believe were written by the woman. The messages explained how she felt she had failed in her life and that no one understood her.

Phuket City Police Chief Col Kamol explained to The Phuket News this afternoon, “We heard the rumours that the woman said she had been raped and I ordered my investigators to look into this.
• Thai capital's only nudist resort

From the outside, Barefeet Naturist Resort appears just like any other Thai home in the residential area of Lad Phrao — large traditional wooden doors, white paint and tree ferns — but the obvious difference is that there are no windows, seemingly to ensure the privacy of the guests.
Located in the back of an alley on Prasert Manukit amidst local houses and home offices, Barefeet is a meetup spot for Bangkok’s nudists and visitors who prefer to maintain their naturist lifestyle while on holiday.
Charged THB80 per hour for non-residential visitors or a nightly rate from THB1,600, those who enter are expected to be nude, but a towel is permitted in case you are not yet comfortable baring it all. On a recent Thursday afternoon, there were a few Thai men lounging naked in a swimming pool while another one casually did some work on his laptop while sitting nude on a towel.
On a busier day, however, there are crowd-pleasing activities to participate in that might include a barbeque, yoga or outdoor movie night, that people pay to do together while naked.
