Every year, takes place in the deep south of Ethiopia, in the
remote area of Omo valley, the celebration of the Bodi tribe new
year: the Kael. For 6 months the men from the tribe will feed themselves with only fresh milk and blood from
the cows. They will not be allowed to have sex and to go out of their little hut. Everybody will take care of them, the girls bringing milk every morning in pots or bamboos. The winner is the bigger. He just
wins fame, nothing special. This area does not welcome tourists and has kept his traditions

Photo shows: The cows are sacred in Bodi tribe, so they are not killed. The blood is just taken after making a hole in a vein with a spear or an axe, then they close it with clay.
• The Bra Fence

The Cardrona Bra Fence of Central Otago, New Zealand, began in 1999 some time between Christmas and New Year, when four women's bras were found attached to the wire fence alongside the road. It's not known who did it and why, but rumor is that a group of women were celebrating the new year at the Cardrona Hotel, and after leaving the pub late at night, they decided to take off their bras and hang them on the fence. The sight of female lingerie fluttering in the wind inspired more women to leave their undergarments, and by the end of February 2000, the original four were joined by sixty more. As news about the fence spread, even more bras started appearing. In the following years the bra population multiplied to thousands and the fence became a unique tourist attraction gaining worldwide attention. Unfortunately, not everyone was pleased. Some viewed the fence as an eyesore and embarrassment and also as a potential hazard to drivers using the road. Over the years, the fence was stripped off the bras on numerous occasions. But the bras returned each time. The first attempt at clearing was made just two months after the first bras were attached. Another attempt was made in October 2000 when a few unknown persons removed some 200 bras from the fence. In 2006, even the Queenstown Lakes District council stepped in and removed 1,500 bras from the fence. But the fence started rebuilding its collection again. Later that year, an attempt to make the world's longest bra chain was made. The world record fell woefully short by more than 100,000 bras but managed to raised over $10,000 for charity.
The Cardrona Bra Fence continues to be attacked periodically, and depending on when you visit, you might or you might not see the undergarments. But rest assured, the bras will return.
• It's for your own good! Baby elephant trapped in a well is rescued by conservationists in amazing video

Perhaps it’s because many of us watched the Disney classic Dumbo as a child that we all seem to have a special place in our hearts for elephants, especially baby ones.
That’s what makes this latest video from elephant research and conservation project Amboseli Trust for Elephants - which has now started to trend on the internet - so special.
An eight-month-old calf became stuck in a shallow well in the parched grounds of Amboseli national park in Kenya - while its increasingly anxious mother, Zombe, looked on, powerless to help.

Luckily, the Trust got word of the incident in the Rift Valley Province earlier this week and sent two jeeps to assist.
The rescue operation began early in the morning - before the mother would have been forced to leave by herders who would soon arrive to water their cattle.

At first, the team struggled to attach a rope around the calf in the 5ft-deep hole as the low-lying water caused the cord to float to the surface.
Finally, they managed to secure it and, with the other end of the rope attached to a jeep, hauled the animal to safety.

What followed was truly tearjerking.
The calf thundered across the barren plain, leaving a trail of dust in its wake.
In the distance, the cries of Zombe could be heard as she came running in the opposite direction.
And then they were reunited, embracing each other with their trunks.
They then turned to the camera, perhaps as a sign of gratitude to the little one's saviours.
In the distance, the cries of Zombe could be heard as she came running in the opposite direction.
And then they were reunited, embracing each other with their trunks.
They then turned to the camera, perhaps as a sign of gratitude to the little one's saviours.

With it's nautical navigation charts and torpedoes mounted on the ceiling, at first glance this could be a Cold War submarine, patrolling the deep.
But look a little closer and the control desk where a commander might fire a missile from is in fact a DJ booth, while underneath the pressure gauges and periscopes sit tables and bar stools.
New theme bar Submarine is bringing a little of the ocean to land-locked Cluj-Napoca, Romania's second largest city after capital Bucharest, offering revellers a deep sea drinking experience.
The bar is the brainchild of Romanian design company, 6th-Sense Interiors - who previously created a Jules Verne theme pub Joben Bistro in the city - and is split into two vault-shaped rooms, each with its own bar, as well as details found on many a submarine, such as control panels, visible pipes, bolted metal doors, an engine-powered propeller and two torpedoes which are attached to the ceiling.

Eastern State Penitentiary was erected in 1929 and at the time, it was the largest and most expensive public structure in the country with a final price tag of $750,000. Its architectural significance first arose in 1821, when British architect John Haviland was chosen to design the building. Haviland found most of his inspiration for his plan for the penitentiary from prisons and asylums built beginning in the 1780s in England and Ireland. He gave the prison a neo-Gothic look to install fear into those who thought of committing a crime.
The “Pennsylvania system” was implemented in Eastern State, a revolutionary system of incarceration which encouraged sepereate confinement as a form rehabilitation. Until 1904, prisoners entered the institution with a black hood over their head, so they would never know who their fellow convicts were, before being led to the cell where they would serve the remainder of their sentence in near-constant solitude. All contact with the outside world more or less ceased for Eastern State prisoners.
The basis design of the prison consisted of an octagonal center connected by corridors to seven radiating single-story cell blocks, each containing large single cells with hot water heating, a water tap, toilet and individual exercise yards the same width as the cell. But by the time cell block three was completed, the prison was already over capacity, so all cell blocks built thereafter consisted of two floors.
Each cell was lit by a single source of light either by a skylight or window, which was considered the “Window of God” or “Eye of God”. The church viewed imprisonment, usually in isolation, as an instrument that would modify sinful or disruptive behavior. The time spent in prison would help inmates reflect on their crimes committed, giving them the mission for redemption.
• Abandoned Navel Base

Florida became the center for naval aviation training during the late 1930s. The warm climate, miles of sandy beaches, and rugged land became ideal training grounds for troops.

On September 11, 1940, the U.S. Navy opened Naval Air Station Lee Field in northeast Florida. The Air Station was named in honor of Ensign Benjamin Lee, who died during World War I. By March 1941, the U.S. Navy had spent $1.8 million on the base; which consisted of 4 runways, aircraft maintenance services, and housing for military personnel.

NAS Lee Field was primarily used to train pilots for aircraft carrier landing operations during World War II. In August 1943, the facility was renamed Naval Air Station Green Cove Springs. At the end of the war the Naval base was downgraded in status to a Naval Auxiliary Air Station (NAAS) and transferred to NAS Jacksonville for limited training purposes. Its proximity to the St. Johns River made the facility an excellent location to securely store the U.S. Naval Atlantic Reserve or “Mothball Fleet” of WWII U.S. Navy ships.
President Lyndon B. Johnson decommissioned the naval base in 1960 under his first executive order. He relocated the “Mothball Fleet” to his home state of Texas. The city of Green Cove Springs annexed the abandoned naval base and sold it to Reynolds Metal Company for redevelopment. Reynolds Industrial Park was established in 1965, which included 1,700 acres served by rail, highway, water and private airport. The private airfield portion of Reynolds Industrial Park was known as Reynolds Airpark. The single 5,000-foot runway is in very poor condition, but is listed as currently operational with the FAA. The original air traffic control tower is still attached to the former Navy aircraft hangar. By 2000, a majority of Reynolds Industrial Park had fallen into decline. Military relics still littered the landscape. World War II infrastructure and buildings sat in a dilapidated state. Over the next few years, s

After being diagnosed with tuberculosis in 1851, Calvin Oak was told he would be dead within six months. Oak decided to move his family from Vermont to Jacksonville, Florida in hopes that a warmer, sunny environment would cure his ailment. Surrounded by fresh air, Calvin Oak lived another 30 years and became one of Jacksonville’s most prominent businessmen. He built the first factory in the city, a gun plant that manufactured guns, barrels, and cartridges. Oak also purchased and operated a jewelry store on Bay Street. The power remains on although the funeral home has been abandoned for years. In 1856, Calvin Oak and his son, Byron, opened a marble and mortuary business. After his father passed away, Byron continued growing the business as the Moulton & Kyle Funeral Home. In 1914, Mark & Shetfall, a local architecture firm, was hired to design a two-story Prairie School style building at 17 West Union Street in downtown Jacksonville. Due to a high demand for parking, an attached garage was built several years later that featured a turntable, which allowed cars to drive in and turn around facing the street. Over the years, the funeral home became known as the Kyle McLellan Funeral Home after S.M. McLellan purchased the business. In the early 1990s, the funeral home was sold to the Peeples Family Funeral Home. After almost a century of operating at the West Union Street building, the business was moved in 2013 to a new location with updated facilities. • China is building the world's biggest radio telescope that's the equivalent of 30 football pitches so it can ‘listen to the UNIVERSE’

China is building the world’s largest radio telescope in Guizhou province, south west China.

Construction for the Five hundred metre Aperture Spherical Telescope, shortened to FAST, started in March 2011. The project is now expect to be completed by September 2016.

The gigantic radio telescope will cost approximately 1.2 billion Yuan (£120 million), making it the biggest astronomy project China has ever had.

It will allow scientists to get weaker radio signals from outer space, even further than our solar system,
Li Di, the chief scientist of the National Astronomical Observatories Chinese Academy of Sciences, said: ‘FAST will remain the best in the world in the next twenty to thirty years after it is completed.’

The idea of building this radio telescope was first proposed in 1993.

But it was only approved in 2006 after an international review and advisory conference on the science and technology of FAST.

It has been described as 'ears' and will help scientists listen to the universe.
Scientists from different fields, including physicists, geologists and astronomers, welcomed the construction of the new telescope as it will boost the human capacity to observe outer space.

Chen Xuelei, a physicists said that the data can help prove Einstein’s relativity theory once more data of gravitational waves can be retrieved from the telescope.

Li Di added: 'FAST can answer questions not only limited to astronomy but questions about humanity and nature. The scientific potential of this telescope is hard to predict.’ The telescope is made up of 4,450 reflective panels. The size of the dish will be about thirty football pitches.

Cables are attached to every reflective panels to control its coordinates.

The intricate design allows scientists to shift the dish to receive radio signals from different angles.
Summer of Color is the culmination of the efforts of nearly 6,000 children in schools, hospitals, and social service programs – and more than 2,500 adult volunteers – who have participated in the initiative’s program activities, which included the painting of the panels now installed on the walls and roof tops of the towers.

Many children and adults involved in the project have experienced a variety of medical and physical challenges. To meet the individual needs of children and adults with disabilities, Portraits of Hope developed specialized painting brushes and techniques including telescope paint brushes for those in wheel chairs or attached to IVs, the shoe brush for individuals unable to manipulate a brush with their hands, and fruit-flavored mouth brushes for kids and adults with limited movement in their limbs. For persons visually impaired, Portraits of Hope utilized special textured paints. The program also reconfigured a baseball bat provided by St. Louis Cardinal Skip Schumaker into a bat-paint brush that the kids used to paint many of the flowers, fish, and shapes now on the panels.
• Don't let go! Britain's fastest snowboarder reaches speeds of 78mph as the first person in the world to be towed by a commercial PLANE

He is known as Britain's fastest snowboarder and his latest stunt saw him speed up even more.
Jamie Barrow, who is on the British Snowboard Cross Team, completed a death-defying stunt in the Swiss resort of St Moritz, as he was towed behind a commercial aircraft.
Inspired by old black and white photos of skiers being taxied by an aircraft slowly around St Moritz Lake over 100 years ago, the 22-year-old decided to try the stunt himself.

The plane, which Barrow was attached to, reached speeds of 78 miles per hour.
His world's first feat was achieved at the Engadin Airport, in front of stunning snow covered mountains.
The initial plan was to perform the stunt on the frozen lake of St Moritz, but with the ice deemed too unstable, the whole operation was moved to the nearby airport.
St Moritz and the Engadin valley are widely recognised as the birthplace of ski tourism, dating back 150 years.
With temperatures at a crisp -17 degrees and bright sunshine, Barrow hooked on to the PC12 aircraft, flown by Swiss pilot Duri Jos.
In order for Barrow to complete the stunt, a long strip of snow-covered grass running parallel to the runway had been piste-bashed for him to snowboard on while the plane pulled him along.
But when the ice becomes too thin or the water gets too deep, the tip of a glacier starts to float and rapidly cracks into icebergs, creating whatís called a ìcalving edge.î This photograph, captured by NASAís Terra satellite in 2003, shows the calving edge of the Helheim Glacier in Greenland. Comparing similar images from 2001 and 2005 reveals that the solid portion of the glacier has been shrinking rapidly. Measurements from NASA reveal that in just four years, the glacierís margin retreated 4.7 miles and its flow speed increased from 5 to 7.5 miles per year. Between 2001 and 2003, the thickness of the glacier also shrunk by about 131 feet. Unfortunately, the entire Greenland Ice Sheet has been undergoing similar shrinkage, thinning by tens of yards in the past decade. While warmer temperatures have certainly caused some of the thinning, scientists also think that the retreat of the ice margin has played a role: With less grounded ice to slow the ice sheet down, itís moving out to sea at a faster rate.
• And they're ruff... Now the driving dogs have been let loose on the racetrack (and show they really CAN drive a car)

For the four-legged competitors, two months of hard work – and a fair few treats – ensured they were raring to get on the racetrack.
So when the big day rolled around, the only ones likely to get hot under the collar were any bystanders who spotted a Mini hurtling towards them with a dog at the wheel.
Two mutts made history yesterday by driving a car down a racetrack. Ten-month-old beardie cross Porter put his paws to the pedals first, steering the Mini down the straight and then turning a corner.
He was followed by Monty, an 18-month-old giant schnauzer cross, who completed the same feat.
In just eight weeks, they progressed to driving a real car – a modified Mini in which they sat on their haunches in the driver’s seat.
Their front paws were on the steering wheel, while their back paws were on levers attached to the accelerator and the brake.

After successfully manoeuvring the car around a lab, the leading two were challenged to a racetrack test-drive which was broadcast live online.
They were strapped in with seatbelts and then followed commands from their trainers, who walked in front of the car.
The dogs were all rescued by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Auckland, New Zealand. The charity came up with the idea to train them to drive to prove how intelligent they were.
Animal trainer Mark Vette, who schooled the dogs, said: ‘They are great dogs, each with their own distinct personality.
• Building That Plays Music When It Rains

Not only is this beautiful, but it also plays music when it rains. This building is located in Dresden, Germany. It's called Neustadt Kunsthofpassage. And when it rains it starts to play music. when the rain starts to fall, this colourful drain and gutter system attached to the outside of a building in the Neustadt Kunsthofpassage turn into charming musical instruments. The Funnel Wall is one of the strangest and most enjoyable attractions in Dresden's student district in the new town. The Neustadt Kunsthofpassage, is an artsy neighborhood in Dresden, Germany. Somebody had the genius idea to cover one wall with funnels and gutters shaped like musical instruments that capture water as it runs off the building into this elaborate drainage system.
• The Shelf Cloud
In this stunning capture by Gonzalo G. Useta, we see a massive shelf cloud off the coast of Montevideo, Uruguay. A shelf cloud is a low, horizontal, wedge-shaped Arcus cloud. They are typically attached to the base of a parent cloud, which is usually a thunderstorm, but could form on any type of convective cloud

Rising cloud motion often can be seen in the leading (outer) part of the shelf cloud, while the underside often appears turbulent and wind-torn. Cool, sinking air from a storm cloud’s downdraft spreads out across the land surface, with the leading edge called a gust front. This outflow cuts under warm air being drawn into the storm’s updraft. As the lower cooler air lifts the warm moist air, its water condenses, creating a cloud which often rolls with the different winds above and below
Conjoined twin baby girls connected at the abdomen abandoned in Chinese orphanage

Conjoined twin baby girls have been abandoned at an orphanage in China after it is believed their parents could not afford to care for them.
The girls, who are only about three months old, are connected by their abdomens and lie face-to-face.
They are awaiting specialist treatment in Beijing where it is hoped they can be separated.
he girls were handed to the organisation in Pingdingshan City, Henan Province, on August 11 and have since been named Zheng Hanjing and Zheng Hanwei.
However, it is not known exactly how old they are.

Hanjing and Hanwei have been transferred to a children's home in Beijing while they await a variety of tests to determine if they share any vital organs.
They are being cared for by Mercy Corps children's home and staff member Deng Zhixin said that from 140 rescued children, this was their first case of conjoined twins.
She told Chinese news site Fawan that she refused to 'judge' the twin's mother for abandoning them.

She said it was likely their mother may have been forced to give up her children because of poverty and being unable to afford proper medical care.
Deng said the pair are 'lively' and they are turned by staff every hour as they cannot roll by themselves.
It is hoped the twins could be separated as early as this month but surgeons still need to determine what, if any, organs the babies are connected by.

Next week the babies will be given a heart examination and abdominal ultrasounds to see if any organs are shared.
About one in every 200,000 live births worldwide result in conjoined twins.

Around 40 to 60 per cent of conjoined twins arrive stillborn, and about 35 per cent survive only one day and long-term survival is between five and 25 per cent.
The condition is three times more likely to occur among females than males and a third of conjoined twins are attached at the low

A DEFECTOR'S LIFE IN SOUTH KOREA

Kim is 16 years old and lives in Seoul, South Korea. She looks like any other teenager when you see her shopping in the street. But like 28,000 other refugees, she has escaped from North Korea. One morning in 2011, her mother could no longer bear the misery, lack of freedom and food deprivation, so she and her daughter escaped to seek refuge in the wealthy ultra-modern South Korea. Kim was 10 and had to leave the rest of her family, her friends and her school without even having the chance to say goodbye.
They fled their country in secret by crossing on foot and by night the river making up the border with China. Their journey to reach South Korea took eight long months. After making it to China, her mother used her meager savings to pay smugglers to enter Laos, Thailand and finally South Korea. They arrived in the Land of Morning Calm in 2012.

Photo shows: Kim remembers the sad memories of her past life, they were suffering from the widespread famine and had nothing to eat – her mother told her that she was going to kill her rabbits. They were her pets... She herself was born under the sign of the Rabbit and was deeply attached to them. Torn by hunger, she ate her friends in tears...
Since then, she has fought for animal rights and campaigns against the consumption of dog meat in Seoul, a tradition that is still alive in both Koreas.
rare images from Hitlers hide out in Austria, these images where produced by theNazis to try and show what a nice chap he was!

Photo shows: ‘Adolf Hitler Hill’ on the Obersalzberg, (1,000 metres above sea level).
Two young women, having reached a point on the Obersalzberg then known as ‘Adolf Hitler Hill’, give the unmistakable Nazi salute while posing for the camera. A strategically placed flag acts like a magnet attracting people to the spot that was located close to the home of Hermann Göring. In addition to the flag, the location had a stone marker with two plaques attached. The inscription on the larger plaque read, ‘Reichskanzler Adolf-Hitler-Höhe 21 März 1933’, this referred to the first opening of the Reichstag under Hitler’s Chancellorship. The smaller plaque had a quotation by Bavarian poet and novelist Ludwig Ganghofer; ‘Wer Gött lieb hat, lässt er fallen, in’s Berchtesgad’ner Land’ (He whom God loves, He drops into Berchtesgadener Land).
