The The Udawalawe Dam is a large irrigation dam in Udawalawe, in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. The dam consists of an embankment section and a gravity section, combining the total dam length to approximately 3.9 km (2.4 mi).
Its main task is not to generate electricity, but to regulate the water level in the river, to prevent the flooding of areas in heavy rains. Construction began in 1953, and was completed in 1964. The output is 36.7 MW. The dam has an arcuate shape, which gives it a certain elegance.
